Spiders around Southern Utah homes
Utah has hundreds of spider species. Most are harmless and even useful, but they make a mess of webs and unnerve people. Wild Aware Utah lists the black widow as the only spider of medical concern in the state. Wolf spiders, sac spiders and cellar spiders are common house visitors.
Where spiders settle
- Eaves, porch lights, window frames and entryways
- Garages, sheds and storage areas
- Woodpiles, rock piles and block walls
- Window wells, meter boxes and irrigation boxes
- Undisturbed corners inside, like closets and basements
Outdoor lights draw insects, and insects draw spiders. That is why webs collect around lights and doorways.
What we do
Spider and scorpion treatment is included with our pest control service. We treat where spiders hide and travel, and we knock down webs on the outside of the home. A customer described it this way: he "cleans all cobwebs on the outside of my house also."
What you can do
- Seal cracks and gaps and repair door sweeps and weather stripping
- Reduce clutter and use sealed bins for storage
- Move firewood and rock piles away from the house
- Vacuum corners, window frames and egg sacs regularly
- Wear gloves when handling wood, boxes and debris
