Water made Hurricane, and pests follow water
Hurricane was settled in 1896 at about 3,258 feet. The Virgin River forms most of its northern border, and Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park are close by. The 7.5-mile Hurricane Canal, completed in 1904, carried river water to farmland on the Hurricane Bench, and the town once grew peaches, apricots and pecans. Its population went from 13,748 in 2010 to 20,036 in 2020.
What that means for pests
Homes near the river, reservoirs and irrigated ground tend to have more moisture, and moisture draws ants, earwigs, spiders and rodents. New neighborhoods on the edges of town are next to open ground where scorpions and desert spiders live.
What Hurricane homeowners ask about
- Ants and earwigs near irrigation and landscaping. See ant control
- Spiders on eaves, porches and in garages. See spider control
- Scorpions at the edges of newer developments
- Rodents on larger lots with outbuildings
- Weeds on larger lots and vacant ground
