Common signs
- Small dark droppings along walls, in cabinets, in the garage or in the attic
- Scratching or scurrying noises at night, especially in walls or ceilings
- Gnawed food packaging, wires or wood
- Greasy rub marks along baseboards
- Nests made from paper, fabric or insulation
- A stale, musky smell in closed spaces
Where to look
Check behind appliances, under sinks, inside pantries and cabinets, in the garage, and in the attic. Cold weather pushes mice into homes, USU Extension has noted, so activity often picks up in fall.
Why they get in
Mice can squeeze through gaps as small as about a quarter inch. Gaps around pipes and wires, garage door seals, vents and foundation cracks are typical entry points.
Clean up safely. Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings or nests. Wear gloves, spray the area with disinfectant, let it soak, then wipe it up and dispose of it. Rodent droppings can carry disease.
What to do
- Store food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs.
- Seal gaps and cracks.
- Clear clutter where they nest.
- If you keep seeing signs, call for help. Removal without sealing is a temporary fix.
See rodent control for how we handle it, and the La Verkin page for cooler-weather notes.
