What monsoon season means here
St. George gets only about 8.8 inches of rain in a year, and monsoon storms from early July through mid-September bring some of it. Humidity rises, evenings cool off after storms, and the ground gets wet in a place that is usually dry.
Pests that people notice
- Scorpions: Local news coverage has linked monsoon rain to more sightings. See scorpion season in Southern Utah.
- Ants: Rain and saturated soil can push ants to look for dry shelter, sometimes inside.
- Spiders: More insects around lights means more spiders and more webs.
- Weeds: Summer moisture can trigger a fresh flush of growth in lawns, gravel and rock beds.
Before the storms
- Seal gaps around doors, windows and pipes.
- Clear debris, boards and stacked materials from the foundation.
- Check that gutters and downspouts drain away from the house.
- Trim plants back from walls.
After a storm
- Check door thresholds, garage doors and windowsills for new arrivals.
- Look for damp spots and standing water near the house.
- Shake out shoes and towels left outside.
When to get help
