How to find scorpions with a blacklight

Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light, which makes a blacklight a useful way to see where they travel around your home.

Published September 24, 2026 by Purple Crown Pest Control, a family-owned pest and weed control company in St. George, Utah.

Why it works

Scorpions fluoresce, which means their bodies glow a bright blue-green under ultraviolet (UV) light. Because they are nocturnal, a nighttime check with a UV flashlight can show scorpions you would never see in normal light.

What you need

  • A UV flashlight (blacklight)
  • Closed-toe shoes and long pants
  • Long tongs or a jar and stiff paper if you plan to remove one

How to do it

  1. Wait until it is fully dark and turn off other lights.
  2. Walk the outside of the house slowly, scanning the foundation, block walls, rock beds and the base of the garage door.
  3. Check walls and around windows, since some scorpions climb rough surfaces.
  4. Then check inside: garage, bathrooms, laundry room and closets.
  5. Note where you find them. Repeated finds in the same spot point to a gap or hiding place nearby.

Safety

  • Do not handle scorpions with bare hands.
  • Do not shine UV light into your eyes or anyone else’s.
  • Keep kids and pets out of the area while you check.
