Common weeds in the area
- Puncturevine (goatheads). A low, mat-forming plant with spiny burrs that puncture bike tires and stick to pet paws.
- Russian thistle (tumbleweed). Grows fast in disturbed ground and breaks off to roll with the wind.
- Grasses in gravel and rock beds. They root in the small amount of soil under rock.
Why weeds thrive here
Full sun, dry soil and lots of disturbed ground from construction and landscaping give weeds space to grow. Monsoon moisture can trigger a fresh flush in late summer.
Pre-emergent and post-emergent
- Pre-emergent treatments go down before seeds sprout and help stop new weeds from starting.
- Post-emergent treatments control weeds that are already growing.
Most yards need both, and timing matters. If you are not sure when to treat, ask us.
Your responsibility
Washington County’s 2026 notice reminds property owners that they are responsible for controlling noxious weeds on land they own or control.
What helps
- Pull small weeds before they seed.
- Keep bare ground covered with rock, mulch or plants.
- Do not let burrs and seed heads spread when you pull or mow.
- Get help for large lots or heavy infestations. See weed control.
